About the Journal
Welcome to Kulturanthropologie Notizen – the publication series (peer review) of the Institute for Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main! The publication series Kulturanthropologie Notizen deals with current issues and innovative research approaches, aiming to contribute to scientific developments as well as to societal discourses from the perspective of the discipline of Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology. Thematic issues are published once or twice a year and are developed in close exchange between editors and authors. Ever since 2021, Kulturanthropologie Notizen is now available open access and are peer reviewed.
The publication series has a long tradition: Founded in 1974 by the director of the institute, Ina-Maria Greverus, it was initially published under the title ‘Institutsberichte’. Over the years, the publication series has also received attention among practitioners outside the discipline. Monographs, especially dissertations, and anthologies have been published with Kulturanthropologie Notizen, including conference reports and honorary volumes. In addition to lecturers, doctoral students and students of the Institute, colleagues from other universities have also repeatedly been authors and editors. The vast majority of the 82 volumes which have been published to date, however, document the results of teaching research projects and serve the transfer of knowledge between the university and the public. We believe this is an integral part of students’ education. Thematically, the spectrum has ranged from topics such as urban development (“STADTGedanken,” Vol. 84; “Urbane Zeiten,” Vol. 34), migration (“Leben im Asyl,” Vol. 51; “Global Heimat,” Vol. 71), environmental policy (“Natur im Kopf,” Vol. 54; “Negotiating Environmental Conflicts,” Vol. 81), to cultural anthropological research on health, the body, and medical expertise (“Gesunde Ansichten,” Vol. 74; “Black Box Brain,” Vol. 82). An overview of all issues published in print can be found here.
Since the beginning of the 2010s, individual thematic issues have also been published in English to maintain close ties with interdisciplinary and transnational discourses. With the conversion to open access, we hope to continue our participation in transnational discourse, especially in light of our English-language Master’s program ‘Science and Technology Studies. Economies, Governance, Life’, which is located at the institute. In this sense, the publication series is also open as a medium for authors who are not directly affiliated with our institute.
